Experiencing Abstract Information

Experiencing Abstract Information from Stefan Kuzaj on Vimeo.

How can you increase the immersion of data? The bachelor thesis „Experiencing Abstract Information“ by Jochen Winker (jochenwinker.de) and Stefan Kuzaj (stefan-kuzaj.de) introduces theoretical principles and shows them with some interactive examples.

There are four essential parts in making abstract information experiencable: information itself, relevant senses, fitting emotion and a direct reference of the presentation to the information. With this method you can not only design fitting media, but also check existing media for its potential.

To demonstrate the systematics, thay built three interactive installations. By using them user become an interactive diagram in a virtual mirror, cause virtual water-pollution in a water-basin or compare the time you have to work in different countries to buy a big mac or some bread. All of these installations show a different approach of immersive data transfer.

THE PAGE_Adaptive Delivery Device from Scott Liao on Vimeo.
One of the major benefits of having gadgets is that it constantly connects us to the world and what’s happening in it. Though these technological devices have allowed us to interact with data from anywhere we choose, there isn’t a unique delivery system for the information they’re delivering especially when “news” is concerned. The printed versions of newspapers can offer mobility, much like a device, but access to content can be cumbersome in certain reading situations. How do we combine the affordances of print and online versions of news and translate that hybrid into a single device? A medium that conforms to human practices and the varied scenarios of accessing news.

IBM Interactive Billboard

Color Sensitive Interactive Billboard from milton cj on Vimeo.
In early 2009, IBM launched its smarter planet agenda – a broad campaign acknowledging the importance of intelligent systems in the world today. In the retail industry, for example, consumer data around something as simple as color can have massive implications around shipping, inventory and, ultimately, overall sales.

This interactive billboard is a simple and engaging virtual demonstration of how a smarter retail system can work.
